A Harvest Hafla!

Join Ritual Rhythms Chicago at Elastic Arts in Logan Square for a live music and bellydance event as we look forward to autumn!

This September, Ritual Rhythms Chicago will be back at Elastic Arts for a wonderful evening of music and dance, featuring the jazzy folk sounds of Leah Shoshanah and Friends, along with Tommy Carroll’s Earth-Space Balance, and a roster of unique Chicago bellydancers, such as Mae the Bellydancer, Jacquelina, Azeema the Bollywood Bellydancer, Jeanne Corvus and Ashley Elgatian.

The evening will begin with our usual community drum jam, as well as our usual assortment of fantastic vendors, with chair massage, tarot readings, jewelry, clothing, food, and more!

The show is Saturday, September 9th at Elastic Arts, 3429 W. Diversey.

Doors open at 6:30 pm, Drum Jam at 7, Dance showcase at 8 and live music starts at 8:30.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Consider a supportive ticket to donate to funding future shows!

Performers

Leah Shoshanah and Friends

Leah Shoshanah is a Chicago-based singer, songwriter & Jewish musician whose soulful, original music deftly navigates the folk, funk, rock and jazz genres. Shoshanah’s original music takes on a life of its own and has inspired audiences to sit spellbound, sing together, laugh, cry and dance.

Shoshanah has played on historic stages in Chicago, like the Old Town School of Folk Music, PianoForte, Martyrs’ and the Green Mill. She has played to audiences of thousands on tour in Germany, put on cabaret-style solo acts in underground neighborhood theaters, led musical meditations, and helped individuals and communities move through loss and celebrate life.

Shoshanah has released two studio albums and two singles, which draw from folk, rock and jazz. Her most recent release, Brave Woman, is “a reminder that we all must carry on in the face of adversity and never stop creating art, speaking out, and living for ourselves” (medium.com). Her debut album, “A Child Like This” (2017), features an ensemble of nine musicians, her second release, “Stillness” (2018), is an intimate collection of solo Jazz and Brazilian guitar arrangements.

As a Cantorial Soloist, Shoshanah sings, plays guitar, leads song and writes original adaptations of Jewish prayer and spiritual texts. She works freelance with communities around Chicago and the country.

Tommy Carroll’s Earth-Space Balance

Tommy Carroll is a Chicago-based drummer / percussionist / composer seeking to create the soundtrack to a more inclusive world. Working primarily in the fields of jazz / improvised music, folkloric percussion and experimental rock, Tommy has performed at venues throughout the city and country.

He leads Calculated Discomfort, a shapeshifting ensemble known for creating cinematic groovescapes, and Prosthetic, a jazz fusion group that doubles as a futuristic danceband. Both groups have given concerts at Grant Park’s Summer Dance series, the Steppenwolf Theater, the Museum of Contemporary Art and several Chicago street festivals, in addition to performing regularly at bars, galleries and local parks.

As a totally blind musician, Tommy promotes disability art and culture as a member of the collective Cuerpos Justificados (Justified Bodies). Recognized for his depth of musical knowledge and quick improvisational instincts, Tommy has been hired to perform on close to 30 albums, and has released six projects of his own compositions. Tommy currently performs with Puerto Rican folk band Piraguas y Piropos, Spanish rock band Raro, West African percussionist
Victoria Boateng, bassist / singer Lyn Rye, and many more.

Earth-Space Balance is a trio of Tommy on drums and percussion, Trevor Hill on woodwinds, and Erica Miller on cello.

Mae the Bellydancer

Mae the Bellydancer is a Chicago staple in the Chicago bellydance community. She was the producer of the beloved burlesque shows The Varietease Cabaret and the Knock Knock Hot Spot, and of course, the director of the long form bellydance show the Glint. Currently she is teaching bellydance at Hyde Park School of Dance to the masses. She is proud to have introduced her new theatrical bellydance show, the Glimmer, this summer, so keep your eyes open for the next event, cause it is going to be killer.

Jacquelina

Jacquelina bellydances from the heart and enjoys storytelling through dance! Jacquelina is a proud Afro-Latina and bellydancing helps her explore a variety of cultures, combine elements of the past with the present, and celebrate her African roots as a Chicago performer.

Azeema

Azeema is Chicago’s Bollywood Bellydancer! She loves connecting with people from all walks of life by sharing culture through dance. Azeema performs a variety of modern, folkloric, and classical dance styles from the Middle East and South Asia. She grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, where her love of the arts started early when she became a musician, playing percussion in jazz, marching, and symphonic bands. Azeema has served as the Board Secretary for Red Clay Dance Company & has taught inclusive dance classes – if you have a body, you can dance!

Ashley

Ashley’s passion for dance began as a child since her mother is a ballroom dancer! Ashley has belly danced now for over 18 years! She has performed internationally – China to Denmark – and owned a dance studio in Norway. Her training includes belly dance, ballet, ballroom, salsa, hip hop, and various folkloric dances.
Ashley graduated from a Korean dance academy in Seoul. She participated in many international dance competitions receiving People’s Choice twice along with various group performance awards. She teaches a wide-array of movement classes- yoga, salsa, ballet, Pilates and belly dance!

Danielle

Danielle is a dancer and instructor based here in Chicago, who started belly dancing when she was 15 years old. She founded Crafted Movement, a platform where she encourages women to connect with their bodies and feel liberated through various movement practices. She teaches movement and empowerment workshops throughout the city called, Goddess Vibes. The classes are filled with dance (of course), meditation and breathing techniques. She’s taken various dance styles over the years, and loves combining everything she knows to create something fresh and exciting for audiences to enjoy!

Amalia Kouvalis

Amalia Kouvalis is a Chicago based artist with a BFA in oil painting and printmaking from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work is heavily influenced by dreams, silent films, melancholy, and Victorian aesthetics. Amalia has exhibited her work in several group shows since 2015 and sells artwork at Sideshow Gallery in Chicago. She has been a featured artist at Voyage Chicago, PM Magazine, Fascination with Fear, Windy City Greek, Art People Gallery, and The Art Hunters.

Renee Field (aka Helena Dawson) is a world-traveler, multidisciplinary artist, and performer. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lewis & Clark College. She will be selling art, jewelry, woodwork, and vintage items. She is excited to participate in Ritual Rhythm’s event and to share her creativity with fellow dance and art enthusiasts <3

The Typing Bat

I do on-demand typewriter poetry based on each client’s suggestion. The client gets the poem and a spoken word performance thereof. I am Everyone’s Type!

The Willough Bee

I specialize in fiber arts, specifically macrame wall hangings, plants hangers, bags and accessories. As a plant lover, macrame has become a therapeutic way for me to create usable garb for homes and gardens. I also enmesh my love of art and herbs through crafting specialty drinks and blends of aromatic teas and coffees. It has become a passion of mine working in the coffee industry for 4+ years.

The Body Talk Warrior

Katie Jenecko is a women’s holistic coach who focuses on holistic transformation, specifically on changing the relationship with alcohol. She is a certified reiki master teacher, health and life coach and bars practitioner.

For this event, she will offer chair reiki sessions.
